Staff Selection Commission has released the SSC JE 2026 Notification for 1,748 tentative vacancies across 14 central government organizations — and most candidates scanning it are missing one detail: this exam isn’t only for engineers. SSC JE 2026 also recruits Scientific Assistant in the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a post with completely different eligibility (a Physics/Computer Science/Electronics degree, not an engineering diploma) buried inside the same notification.

Online applications open 2 September 2026 and close 22 September 2026. Whether you’re eyeing JE (Civil/Electrical/Mechanical/Telecom) or the IMD Scientific Assistant route, this guide breaks down the complete organization-wise vacancy and eligibility table, age limits, exam pattern, pay scale, and every date from the official notice — so nothing gets missed before the window closes.

SSC JE Scientific Assistant (IMD) 2026: Eligibility Explained
This is the post most SSC JE 2026 coverage skips over, because it isn’t an engineering post at all. Scientific Assistant in the India Meteorological Department (IMD) requires:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Science with Physics as one of the subjects, from a recognized institution/university, OR
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science / Computer Applications / Electronics / Electronics & Communication Engineering / Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering / Instrumentation / Information Technology / Telecommunication Engineering / Communication Engineering from a recognized institution/university.
Age limit for this post is up to 30 years (as on 1 August 2026), same age-window logic as most other posts in this notice. Candidates eligible for Scientific Assistant are also automatically eligible to apply for JE (Telecom), provided they meet JE (Telecom)’s own EQ separately.
In the exam itself, Scientific Assistant (IMD) candidates attempt one of three technical papers — Part-D (Computer Science & IT), Part-E (Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering), or Part-F (Physics) — chosen at the time of filling the Online Application Form, based on their stream/branch.
Age Relaxation
The crucial date for age reckoning is 1 August 2026.
| Code | Category | Age Relaxation Beyond Upper Age Limit |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | SC/ST | 5 years |
| 02 | OBC | 3 years |
| 03 | PwBD (Unreserved/EWS) | 10 years |

| 06 | Ex-Servicemen (ESM) | 3 years after deduction of the military service rendered from the actual age |
| 08 | Defence Personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area, released as a consequence (Unreserved/EWS/OBC) | 3 years |
| 09 | Defence Personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area, released as a consequence (SC/ST) | 8 years |
Note: Age relaxation is not admissible to sons, daughters, or dependents of Ex-Servicemen.
Application Fee
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| General/OBC/EWS (Male) | ₹100 |
| Women (all categories) | Exempted |
| SC/ST | Exempted |
| PwBD | Exempted |
| Ex-Servicemen (ESM) | Exempted |
Fee is payable only via BHIM UPI, Net Banking, or Visa/MasterCard/Maestro/RuPay Debit card, up to 23 September 2026 (23:00 hours). Fee once paid is non-refundable and cannot be adjusted against any other exam.
Reservation Details
Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/EWS and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) is determined by the individual Indenting Organizations and communicated to SSC — the Commission itself does not decide vacancy-wise reservation splits. There is no reservation for Ex-Servicemen (ESM) category, since JE posts are classified as Group ‘B’; ESM candidates only get the age-relaxation benefit listed above.
PwBD suitability (except BRO): the posts covered in this notice are identified as suitable for specific categories of Benchmark Disability depending on the post — broadly Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH), Locomotor disabilities without neurological/limb dysfunction (OA/OL/CP/LC/Dw/AAV/SD/SI), Specific Learning Disability/Mental Illness (SLD/MI), and Multiple Disabilities (MD) combining the above. JE (Telecom) in DoT additionally accepts Low Vision candidates. REQUIRES OFFICIAL CHECK: exact sub-category suitability varies post-by-post — candidates should confirm their specific disability category against the detailed table in the official notice.
Scribe/Technology/Assistive Devices facility: available to PwBD candidates with Low Vision/Cerebral Palsy (on request while filling the form), and to other PwBD/PwD candidates with a valid medical certificate. A compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour of examination is given to candidates using this facility. Only male candidates are eligible for JE posts in the Border Roads Organization (BRO), and BRO applicants must separately satisfy BRO’s own Physical Efficiency Test and medical standards.
Pay Scale / Salary
All posts under this notice — JE (Civil/Electrical/Mechanical/Telecom) and Scientific Assistant (IMD) — are Group ‘B’ posts in Pay Level-6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission Pay Matrix, with a pay band of ₹35,400 – ₹1,12,400. REQUIRES OFFICIAL CHECK: exact in-hand salary after allowances (DA, HRA, TA) varies by posting location and is not detailed in the syllabus/eligibility notice itself.
SSC JE 2026 Exam Pattern
The Computer Based Examination (CBE) is conducted in two papers — Paper-I (qualifying) and Paper-II (merit-determining).
| Paper | Subject | Questions/Max Marks | Duration | Negative Marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper-I | (i) General Intelligence & Reasoning | 50/50 | 2 hours (2 hrs 40 min for scribe-eligible candidates) | -0.25 per wrong answer |
| Paper-I | (ii) General Awareness | 50/50 | (same session) | -0.25 per wrong answer |
| Paper-I | (iii) Relevant Engineering/Technical subject (Part-A to Part-G as applicable) | 100/100 | (same session) | -0.25 per wrong answer |
| Paper-II | Relevant Engineering/Technical subject (Part-A to Part-G as applicable) | 100/300 | 2 hours (2 hrs 40 min for scribe-eligible candidates) | -1 per wrong answer |
Key rules:
- Paper-I is qualifying in nature — candidates are shortlisted for Paper-II based on Paper-I merit, subject to minimum qualifying marks.
- Separate merit lists are drawn for JE (Civil), JE (Electrical & Mechanical), Scientific Assistant (IMD), and JE (Telecom).
- Both papers are Objective Type, Multiple-Choice Questions only, set in Hindi and English.
- A Scientific Calculator is available on-screen for the full exam duration; no physical calculator is allowed.
- IS 456:2000 Code of Practice and Steam Table (where required) are available on the candidate’s console.
- Scores are normalized if the exam runs in multiple shifts; Mechanical and Electrical Engineering scores are also normalized against each other since they use different question papers.
- Tentative Answer Keys are published after CBE; candidates can raise objections at ₹50 per question (non-refundable).

Author’s Suggestion
If you’re eligible for Scientific Assistant (IMD) but were only tracking JE Civil/Mechanical/Electrical coverage, don’t skip this option purely because it’s less talked about — smaller applicant awareness genuinely means less competition per seat. Whichever post you’re targeting, lock your organization and post choice before filling the form, since the subject/stream opted for at application time cannot be changed later under any circumstances.
